Erin Gates

California State Parks PORTS Program
PORTS Program Coordinator & K12 Access Project Coordinator
San Diego, CA
Erin has been actively engaged in the field of interpretation for over 15 years. Graduating from Humboldt State University with a B.S. in Natural Resources Interpretation, Erin began her career as a field interpreter among the majestic Redwoods in northern California. She has blended traditional interpretive programming into recreational opportunities including river rafting, kayaking, sailing excursions and whale watching tours in California,Oregon and New Zealand.

In the last 5 years, Erin has dedicated her career to infusing technology into high quality interpretive programming, as part of the award winning California State Parks PORTS (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students) Program. She served as a presenter offering videoconference programs to K12 classrooms throughout California, the USA and the world, from Hearst Castle, and was responsible for a 300% increase in students reached due to development of a high level partnership with Microsoft Education. She now acts as a statewide PORTS Program Coordinator assisting 15 Districts across the state with planning, training, and executing the use of digital tools to enhance both onsite interpretive programs, and to expand interpretive reach & digital access to audiences that are not coming to parks.

Erin currently serves NAI as both a Wild West Region and National Board of Directors Member. She is thrilled to be a part of digitizing our profession in a way that both increases access to all audiences, and helps keep our profession relevant for all generations.
